Mother arrested after toddler tests positive to cocaine

A US mother faces several charges after her two-year-old son tested positive to cocaine in September 2017.

Originally arrested in December 2018, Kalin Swartz, 30, was charged with dangerous drugs assault when cocaine was found in her toddler’s system, resulting in her fleeing the state.

Ms Swartz was arrested in Texas on Sunday morning and is being extradited to Oregon, after a woman tipped off investigators as to her whereabouts.

In 2017, it was found Ms Swartz was negligent of her son’s dental care and not only had she failed to disclose the boy had suffered two second-degree burns while in her care, but she also failed to seek medical attention for him, resulting in the courts ordering her to restricted, supervised visits.

Shortly after the court order, Oregon Department of Human Services received an anonymous call saying the boy may have cocaine in his system, prompting his father to rush him to hospital, where he indeed tested positive to cocaine.

After learning of Ms Swartz’s background, a woman known to the mum told authorities of her whereabouts, also reporting that she had crashed her truck and previously had admitted to stealing credit cards.

Swartz is currently being held at the Midland County Jail. Her bond is yet to be set.
