A ring encrusted with 12,638 diamonds has set a new world record

How many diamonds can fit in a single ring? The answer, according to the new Guinness World Records book, is 12,638.

The ring, named the Marigold, or 'The Ring of Prosperity,' has a circular band with an ornate floral design, complete with thousands of 38.08 carat natural diamonds, according to Guinness.

The previous record — 7,801 diamonds in a ring — was also set in India by the Hyderabad-based jeweler Hallmark Jewellers. They held that record for slightly over a month.

Bansal, 25, told Guinness he was first inspired to break the diamond-studded record in 2018, while studying jewelry design in Surat, India.

Two years later, his company completed the ring design on November 30, 2020.

"My target was always more than 10,000 diamonds. I trashed many designs and concepts over the years to finally zero in on this," he told AFP.

The designer said he'd spent a long time thinking about designs, eventually stumbling on the inspiration he needed in his garden.

"A marigold flower caught my eye and I put it in between my fingers to see how it will look. It was then that I decided," he said.

According to the Renani Jewels Instagram page, each petal in the ring's eight-layer design is uniquely shaped, and no two are identical.

"This gives the ring a perfect blend of organic symmetry, design and alignment," it explains.

The ring weighs a little over 165 grams, and is described as "wearable and comfortable".

Just in case you're getting any ideas, no — Bansal has no intentions of selling his "priceless" ring at the moment.
