Melania slammed over choice of outfit for visit to national park

Melania Trump has been slammed online yet again for her choice of outfit while visiting Grand Teton National Park, despite requests that people stop focusing on what she's wearing.

The FLOTUS was out for a solo engagement as part of her ongoing Be Best campaign, which advocates against cyberbullying and drug use amongst young people.

But the internet was far more interested in what she was wearing than the cause she was promoting, hundreds of people taking to Twitter to troll Melania for her cream ensemble paired with a green puffer jacket.

"That's great gold digging attire," one person wrote on Twitter.

"Can sometime get this lady an appropriate pair of shoes to wear outdoors and tell her maybe not to wear all white?" said another.

People took particular issue with her shoes, a pair of heeled suede boots.

"While your tweets say, 'I'm here to experience the outdoors' your shoes say, 'let's take some photos and then we can head to the lodge bar'," one wrote.

However some responses focused on the hypocrisy of Melania promoting the national park just as President Donald trump faced criticism for disregarding climate change and environmental activism.

"You mean the #NationalParks your husband @realDonaldTrump wants to deplete of their resources?" one wrote.

The fact that people are still attacking Melania for her outfits is a sad, but not surprising one.

The First Lady has spoken about this ongoing issue before – one many powerful women face – and has reminded people that what she's doing is far more important than what she's wearing.

"I want to talk about my trip and not what I wear," she said while visiting Egypt this time last year.

"That's very important, what I do […] my initiatives and I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear."

She's not alone in that desire, with many female politicians speaking out in the last few years about how often people focus on their outfits instead of their policies.

During her time as Australia's first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard faced constant criticism and ridicule for her fashion choices, something none of the country's male politicians have ever had to endure.

Well, except for maybe Tony Abbot in that pair of red speedos.

Melania Trump has made it clear that her words and actions, whether you agree with them or not, are far more important and worthy of comment than what shade her blouse is or how she styled her hair.

And it's about time we start listening to her, regardless of how we feel about her or her husband's politics.
