Melania and Barron are moving to the White House soon

First Lady Melania Trump and son Barron are getting ready to move into the White House.

A White House spokesman confirmed President Donald Trump's former model wife and son would relocate to Washington this summer after the end of the American school year, New York Post reports.

Currently, Melania and 11-year-old Barron are living in Trump Tower in Manhattan, where at one point it was rumoured they would remain permanently.

However, the announced upcoming move is in line with the couple’s previously declared plans to let Barron finish out the school year at the elite Columbia Grammar and Preparatory School before relocating.

An online petition urging Melania Trump to move from Trump Tower in New York to the White House garnered 150,000 signatures after it was revealed it cost taxpayers more than $100,000 a day for the high profile pair to live in the city. 

The Change.org petition - titled 'Make Melania Trump stay in the White House or pay for the expenses herself' - was started after the New York Police Department (NYPD) estimated it costs the American taxpayer between $127,000 and $146,000 a day to keep the First Lady and Trump's 10-year-old son, Barron safe. 

The couple's only child together will become the first boy to live in the White House in more than 50 years, since John F Kennedy Jr lived there as an infant in 1961.

However, the residence will be cosier than what they are used to. Barron was reportedly given an entire floor to himself in the 68-storey Trump Tower.
