Harry and Meghan's 'creative' wedding anniversary gifts to each other

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their second wedding anniversary this week at home with their son Archie, where they exchanged sweet, "creative" gifts.

The royals enjoyed a quiet anniversary in Los Angeles, USA, and reportedly gave each other themed anniversary presents based on an old wedding ritual.

Following a tradition in which each anniversary has a "theme" for its gifts, Harry and Meghan reportedly exchanged cotton presents this year after doing paper for their first anniversary.

"They love to do their own take on traditional wedding gifts," a source told People.

"The first anniversary was paper, and Meghan wrote out the wedding speech and had it framed for him."

According to the tradition, each year has a different 'theme' for the wedding anniversary gift, including paper, cotton, leather, silk and wood.

As the years go by, the married couple can follow the theme to inspire unique and often useful gifts for one another, rather than resorting to ordering something off the other person's Amazon wish list. (Though, that's a good option too.)

"This year, they both gave each other gifts based on 'cotton.' Undoubtedly, it was a very creative and romantic gesture as all their gifts are to one another," the source added of Harry and Meghan's second anniversary gifts.

If they continue to follow the tradition, the royals will have to source leather gifts for their third anniversary; perhaps a nice leather jacket for Harry, or a personalised wallet or bag for Meghan?

Each item is meant to symbolise something within the marriage, such as cotton's interwoven threads representing how close the couple grow over time.

It's a sweet tradition and one many couples – royals or otherwise – still follow today.

The only issue could be the Sussexes' different backgrounds, as some years have different 'themes' in the UK versus the US.

The fourth anniversary comes with a gift of linen or silk in the UK, but in America the theme is fruit or flowers, which could cause a bit of a mix up.

The same goes for year six, when British spouses will go for candy-themed gifts while partners from the US go for iron anniversary presents.

Here's hoping Harry and Meghan hash out which nation's themes they're going to follow ahead of time to avoid any awkwardness on future wedding anniversaries!
