Firies receive bittersweet send-off at Adelaide Airport as Kangaroo Island recovery effort begins

As holidaymakers around the country pack up their suitcases, cars and caravans in preparation for a new working year, our firefighters soldier on with no end in sight. 

Rolling bushfire coverage dominates television screens, donation appeals flood social media and smoke continues to blanket our cities.  

On Sunday morning, dozens of volunteer firefighters boarded a flight to Kangaroo Island where a bushfire wiped out at least one third of the popular holiday destination, claiming two lives in its wake.

As the firies gathered in Adelaide Airport's departure lounge, many carrying just a helmet and a backpack, some a pillow for the rough night ahead, the chief firefighter promptly began outlining the devastation and destruction that awaits them.

Their mission was laid out right in front of us, but we wouldn't see any of it. Afterwards, the entire departure lounge erupted in applause.

Acknowledging our warm send-off, the firies simply nodded their heads and continued making their way onto the aircraft. Their mission was far from over.   

Normally, we are the sun-kissed spectators of beach cricket, but this summer we are spectators of unfathomable tragedy. Our volunteer firies have been cast the starring role; the country's heroes who, through all the devastation, continue to be our glimmer of hope.

Every day they show up. Every day they persevere through catastrophic conditions. And every day they witness indescribable grief that has swallowed entire communities.

To see these men and women on our tellies, our roads and in the flesh, is to be reminded that we are all looking out for one another. And that we can all do more. 

To all the firies across the nation, thank you for your selfless spirit.
