Judge orders man to write 144 nice things about ex-girlfriend

A judge in Hawaii has handed down an unorthodox sentence to a man who pleaded no contest to contacting his ex-girlfriend, despite a violation order.

Daren Young is accused of sending “nasty” messages and calls to his ex, who had a protection order put in place in February this year. As part of the order, he was not allowed to contact his ex, but police said he had called and text 144 times within a three-hour period just two months later.

In response to the behaviour, judge Rhonda Loo ordered Young to write 144 compliments about her - one for every message he sent.

“It’s so childish to think a grown man can be so thumb-happy,” Loo told Young. 

“For every nasty thing you said about her, you’re going to say a nice thing,” he added. “No repeating words.”

The 30-year-old had served 157 days in jail before being sentenced, according to The Maui News. 

Sentencing, Yoo said: “I don’t know whether I should cut off your fingers or take away your phone to get you to stop texting,” Loo told Young. “You probably shouldn’t get a phone, period. I hope she changed her number.”

Young also received two years of probation, $2,400 in fines and 200 hours of community service.
