Jill Meagher's husband responds to Aiia Maasarwe's alleged murder

Tom Meagher has paid his tributes to the family of Aiia Maasarwe after the Israeli student was allegedly murdered in the Melbourne suburb of Bundoora this week.

On the night of January 15, Maasarwe, 21, was coming home from a comedy show when she was allegedly attacked and killed less than a kilometre from her dorm.

Around Australia and in Maasarwe's home of Baqa al-Gharbiyye, tributes are pouring in for the 21-year-old, who has been described as a "friendly, happy, positive" person.

The untimely death has drawn haunting similarities with the high-profile murders of Eurydice Dixon in 2018 and Jill Meagher in 2012.

Tom Meagher, whose wife Jill was killed six years ago, has spoken out about Masaarwe's death and male violence.

"I am so thoroughly sick to my stomach of men murdering women," he wrote in a post on his Twitter last night. 

"The human cost of male violence is staggering, the incalculable social trauma and human misery it engenders is soul destroying. It's weight is intolerable."

He added a 'rest in peace' to Aiia and 'love to her family' at the end of the tweet.

Since his wife's murder, Meagher has acted as a staunch advocate for women's rights and women's safety.

In a tribute to Jill on what would have been the couple's 10^th wedding anniversary last year, Meagher wrote, "I carry the scars of Jill's death because that's how I remember to carry her light inside me.

"Those scars are what connect me and her, they are what teach me, what give me strength, what allow me to hold the confusing mishmash of emotional chaos together and survive, not without her, but with her loving guidance and formidable strength."

Police have charged a 20-year-old man in relation to Aiia Masaarwe's murder.
