9Honey life hacks: How to be more decisive

Shelly Horton

Urgh. I just couldn’t decide how to start this story. I’m not even making a joke. I was going to write about how decisive I have been from a young age. Then I realised as I’ve aged I’ve become less decisive. Now I see grey areas and hazy outcomes.

And that’s the trap of indecisiveness. You become paralysed by choice and afraid of making the wrong decision.

Whether it’s what type of car to buy or whether to accept a new job offer or even just what to wear to a big event.

I’m all about lists and I find big decisions, like changing jobs, I need to write out the pros and cons so I can see it on paper not just think about things. I find seeing the facts written on paper somehow crystallises the options.

But my husband uses this trick.  We have a foreign coin in the lounge room that he calls the “coin of decisiveness” and if we can’t decide on something simple like what take away to order for dinner he gets it out. He’ll say “heads pizza, tails Thai” then flip it in the air. No matter how it lands you ask yourself which one you were rooting for. So, if it lands on Thai and you feel disappointed then you know your decision should be pizza.

It’s a simple trick but it’s actually getting your gut instinct to activate.

There’s a lot of psychology behind making strong decisions as you’ll see in this video.
