Two-time Olympic gold medallist opens up about miscarriage with twins

Soccer star Hope Solo was campaigning to become president of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) when she suffered a heartbreaking loss, miscarrying after trying to fall pregnant for some time.

She and husband Jerramy Stevens, a former NFL player, had wanted to start a family and were overjoyed when Solo finally fell pregnant.

The moment Solo, 37, realised she was miscarrying was a devastating one, which was only made worse when doctors revealed to her a week later that she had been carrying twins.

However one of the foetuses had  been ectopic, meaning it had implanted itself outside the womb, forcing surgeons to remove one of Solo's fallopian tubes when they realised how serious the miscarriage was.

"The doctor said I was hours from dying," she revealed in a recent interview with Elle.

But the show had to go on, and even as Solo suffered from the emotional and physical pains of having just miscarried, she continued working towards her presidency goal.

Less than two weeks after losing the pregnancies she was on stage giving an election speech, no one knowing exactly what she had just been through.

"That speech took a lot. Even before all that, it would have taken courage," she confessed.

Though she didn't win the election, she has continued working towards other goals close to her heart; namely, children.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist has recently started IVF and is hoping to start a family soon.

She's also continuing her work to end sexism in professional soccer, having previously accused the USFF of unfairly favouring men's soccer over women's.
