Professional cleaner reveals four the kinds of filth lurking around the back of your fridge

Cleaning behind the fridge is a notoriously difficult and forgotten task that can be tedious to do properly.

A professional cleaner has revealed in an Instagram post the four reasons why completing this task is essential to maintaining a healthy household.

She starts off her video by discussing dust. "If anyone in your family has allergies, not cleaning behind the fridge may be an issue for them because of the dust," she says,

Mould:

Another common problem that festers behind a fridge is mould, which the cleaner says can be a huge problem both under and behind the fridge.

"If the area is damp, mould can grow. Mould is very harmful to your health."

Bits of food:

Stray food can be an issue due to the scent of rotting food. "Your pets may wrestle some of these crumbs out and spread them through the house, potentially contaminating your floors with foodborne illnesses."

Pests:

Similar to any tough-to-reach spot, behind the fridge is the perfect breeding ground for pests.

"Bits of food on the floor underneath your appliances may attract mice or ants. The First thing I do when I'm cleaning behind a fridge is vacuum the walls, baseboards and floor."

"Then, I vacuum the condenser coils on the back of the fridge. These coils are critical to pushing heat out, so removing the dust and dirt will allow them to more efficiently keep the inside of the fridge cold."

Fridge stock

She goes on to use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe down her fridge as it "will eliminate grease grime and other types of buildup. It cleans and disinfects without scouring or scratching."

Any build-up that's stuck in crevices such as grout lines are easily scrubbed off with all-purpose cleaners, especially foamy ones that can cling to a dirty surface and penetrate grime.

You can use the same cleaner to wipe down the sides and inside of your fridge without damaging the surface.
