'Never a good idea': Expert reveals cleaning nightmare hidden in most Aussie households

A professional cleaner has warned against a common kitchen feature that can be found in most Aussie households.

Kate from @cleanlikeapro_ shared a video to Instagram to share her "controversial" take.

In the video she pointed out a series of reflective glass kitchen splashbacks at her local showroom and revealed why making the right choice for this feature can make a big difference.

"This is a controversial one," she wrote in the caption of the video, before explaining that the aesthetic glass and mirror splashbacks are a terrible idea in her eyes.

"Now yes, this is one big slab of tile so you would think its a good choice," she wrote in the caption of her video.

But, according to Kate, this style of splashback is a nightmare to clean and keep clean so she recommends steering clear.

"Any type of glass or mirror shows every single grease splatter and wipe mark," she continued.

"And when cleaning them you do have to clean them well, wiping over multiple times to ensure no streaks.

"In certain light, every single wipe mark, streak, oil splatter will stand out."

While it's not ideal, Kate did admit that this style of splashback is "not the worst choice" revealing that splashbacks with tiny tiles and lots of grout are even more difficult to clean.

But she stressed that the reflective surface won't do you any favours when it comes to trying to keep your kitchen looking clean.

Even though they may look as sleek, Kate would recommend opting for something else.

"This has nothing to do with something being pretty and everything to do with how easy something is to clean, keep clean and look clean," she added.

"Glass and mirrors equals reflective and that's never a good idea in a kitchen behind a stovetop."

As for the best style splashback to opt for, Kate says the bigger the tile the better.

Small tiles mean lots of grout which dirt and grime can cling to easily and is very difficult to scrub away.

Bigger tiles mean you are less likely to end up with grubby grout on your kitchen back splash, while the matte surface of the tile in comparison to glossy glass or mirrors makes wipe marks and grease less obvious.

"There are much better options. Like large tiles," she says.
