Kmart, where some of us go to spend date night, where some of us deserve a medal for having made it out alive without buying anything. Cheap and cheerful, guilty pleasure or necessity, a spot of Kmart retail therapy appeals to nearly all of us.

So it's no surprise that Kmart hacks are still flying high.

With new tricks being created and shared in groups such as Kmart Mums NZ since 2016, it would seem that we get a collective kick out of turning one thing into something else.

My theory is that this successful foraging of bargains and the creative repurposing of said item or items into something of greater utility lights up multiple reward centres of the house-proud person's brain.

Less investment means more artistic input, which means greater value. It's a new-to-new, creative upcycling process of sorts.

New legs = new look

More at the DIY end of the scale, if you have a much loved table-top whose legs could use a new lease on life, this one's for you.

Simply remove the existing legs, pick up two of the Chunky Ribbed Side Tables, $39, or similar, and set in place. Paint optional.

From sideboard to overhead storage

Bathroom caddies to kitchen shelves

Bringing in a French industrial vibe and helping to turn your kitchen from cluttered to carefully laid-out, this hack will set you back about $60 to $80 on your chosen wood.

You'll need two of the Kmart multi-tier floor caddies and one or two planks of wood, depending on how many shelves you would like the area to have. You can pick up the caddies for $17 each.

Now hear me out, I know it doesn't take much effort, but that's why this is a hack.

Switching up your loose storage inside a set of box shelves by housing your junk inside delightful woven baskets makes an unsightly area into a tidy and colour coordinated one. Kmart currently have a range of basket options available to fit this purpose ranging for under $30.

Bamboo bread bins as a bedside table

Laid out in a step-by-step tutorial on Instagram by blogger Kristine Ham of @extra.ordinary.home, you can turn two Kmart bread bins, $22 each, into the bedside table of your boho mid-century dreams.
