TikToker Bree Renee shared a hack to fix cracked vinyl on graphic T-shirts and it quickly went viral.

In the video she used acetone, an iron and baking paper to fix the cracks in her child's old T-shirt, with users in the comments applauding the simplicity of the method.

However, an apparel printing expert has revealed that not only can the laundry hack ruin your T-shirts, it can also pose health risks if not executed correctly.

Cracking on graphic T-shirts is to be expected when you've had them for a while.  TikTok/breerenee33

Printing expert and CEO of PrintLocker, Jashmal Gosai, says that cracking on your graphic tees is to be expected, especially if you've had it for a long time.

"TikTok has become a powerhouse to seek out quick and simple tips for those who've experienced this to save time and money," he added.

"However, I encourage those looking to try out this hack to be careful and do their research before testing these 'money-saving' laundry hacks they find on social media."

Gosai said that not only can hacks like these "worsen the cracking or tears of your beloved clothing", but using harsh products such as bleach and acetone mixed with heat can negatively affect your health.

But, don't panic. Gosai explained that there are plenty of ways to keep your clothes in good condition without using a TikTok hack.

His first tip is as simple as flipping your graphic tees inside out before putting them in the washing machine because it prevents direct contact between the printed logo on the shirt and the metal drum of the washing machine, which can be abrasive and damaging.

Also, opting for a milder detergent and avoiding products with harsh chemicals like fabric softener can also help.

Another of Gosai's tips is simple but often overlooked – wash your clothes according to the instructions on the label, if your shirt says it needs to be washed in cold water then wash it in cold water.

And finally, avoid heat on your printed tees.

This means hanging them out instead of putting them in the dryer, and if you need to iron them, make sure to flip them inside out or put a protective cloth over the logo.
