As Aussies grapple with soaring, sticky temperatures in tandem with the rising cost of living, one company has revealed a cost-effective alternative to overnight air con use that could save households hundreds of dollars per month.

According to research conducted by mattress company Sleepys, Australians spend an average of around $7.88 per night on air conditioning during the warmer months.

But this eye-watering figure can be reduced by transitioning to a fan in lieu of AC – an move that would cost you just $1.43 per night by comparison.

"Summer heatwaves make it harder to get a good night's sleep and drive up energy costs," says Sleepy's NSW area leader Tania Peatey.

"Switching to a fan can significantly slash Aussie households' overnight cooling bills by more than 80 per cent simply by switching."

According to Peatey, that adds up to thousands of dollars in potential savings per year.

Peatey then cited a recent Tiktok hack as a means to lower your home's temperature.

"One simple trick that's gone viral is positioning a fan near a window so it blows outward, pushing hot air outside," she revealed.

"It might seem counterintuitive, but this method helps draw cooler air into the room and makes the fan much more effective than just pointing it at yourself."

Peatey went on to add that this setup is easy to try at home, and can make a noticable difference to comfort overnight.

Should you wish to take the fan alternative a step further, there's an additional low-tech hack to create a cooling breeze right on par with air conditioning – minus the hit to your wallet.

Taking the fan method one step further, you can create a cool breeze with just a stainless steel bowl and ice. Getty

This particular method is simple, provided you own a moderately-sized stainless steel bowl and are topped up on ice.

Simply fill the bowl with said ice, prop it on an angle, and position your fan to blow onto the bowel.

The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice's surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist.

This then circulates throughout the room, with the steel bowl preventing the ice from melting too quickly.

Another method to help keep the heat at bay this summer is by whipping up a so-called "reverse hot water bottle" to take to bed.

Departing from the traditional method of boiling water to fill the bottle, the hot water bottle's cooler counterpart can be made by filling the bottle with cold water, before popping it into the freezer.
