Man accidentally transforms burnt pot back to sparkling with unlikely kitchen staple

Cleaning your pots and pans just got easier using an unlikely kitchen product. We have seen tomato sauce used as a cleaning aid on TikTok, but it turns out another fridge item works wonders too.

While vinegar and bi-carb soda have earned their titles as kitchen staples, the unsung hero of mayonnaise has recently gone viral on social media.

As it turns out, mayonnaise is an effective cleaner for copper pots, according to TikTok creator, Andy Orr.

Orr was doing the dishes one night when he noticed something interesting.

"So I was washing the dishes tonight, [and] noticed this random clean mark on the pan. Turns out it was mayonnaise"

To further test his discovery, Orr conducted an overnight experiment, leaving mayonnaise on half of the burnt copper pot.

"I'm going to cover it half in mayonnaise, leave it overnight, and see what happens"

Overnight, the cleaning mayonnaise had turned into a "weird" green colour, forming a soft shell over the debris.

The next morning, Orr wiped the green mayo off to reveal a significant difference between both sides of the pot, with the mayo side now sparkling clean.

This cleaning effect is supposedly a result of the vinegar in the mayonnaise being corrosive on grease and grime. Meanwhile, the consistency of the mayonnaise allows the vinegar to sit on the burnt grime longer than vinegar – which is a liquid.

This theory was backed up by viewers in the comments section of the video.

"It's the vinegar" with some suggesting to try another pantry hero, "Ketchup does a better job, more vinegar in it!"

However some disagreed with the concept of cleaning with condiments altogether adding, "Just get a Brilo (steel wool pads) and some Pink Stuff, does the same job."

There are plenty of alternatives to try if the idea of using mayonnaise to clean your pots and pans isn't for you.

The popular Bar Keeper's Friend polish is one option or you could try vinegar-soaked paper towels.
