How six Australian women set a Ninja Warrior world record

It took six years of American Ninja Warrior for a US woman to scale the formidable Warped Wall. New South Wales woman Andrea Hah did it in season one of Australian Ninja Warrior — and an epic six women, including Hah, have conquered it in season two's heats.

The day after the sixth heat, in which Hah repeated her Warped Wall feat, all six women gathered in Sydney to celebrate their world record: Hah, Celeste Dixon, Georgia Bonora, India Henry, Betsy Burnett and Olivia Vivian.

"It's empowering and inspiring to see everyone together and so excited for each other," Hah tells Coach. "It's a really positive energy."

In 2017 there was debate about , who are generally smaller, lighter and less muscular than the males. At the time, Hah was emphatic that women don't have an inherent disadvantage — and she's been proven right.

"I feel really reassured that [sex] doesn't matter," she says. "I feel quite honoured to have been the first woman [up the Warped Wall in season one]. If you can break down the aura of something feeling impossible then it's a lot more encouraging ... for other women."

Hah is humble about her Warped Wall records, but other women in the sextet agree she "fuelled the fire", to borrow Burnett's words.

"Actually seeing Andrea make it up the wall confirmed that it is possible for us. It's there within reach," she adds. "It's an incredible achievement [to get six women up the wall] and I don't think Australia really realises how incredible it is — we've done something that hasn't been done before and hopefully we can keep raising the bar."

"To have Andrea do it in the first year, she proved to Australia that we have what it takes," says Dixon, theorising that our country's strong love of sport and fitness is what helped set the Ninja Warrior global record.

"We're a very sporting country and I think that the rest of the world doesn't have that," she tells Coach. "I feel very proud to put myself in the group of women and men who have made it up the wall. That's a massive thing."

Though the phrase "girl power" sounds a little corny these days, it really does spring to mind when you see six women who've all achieved such an impressive feat gather in one place.

"We're the Spice Girls of Ninja Warrior," jokes Burnett.

The Spice Girls, if there were six of them and they were all Sporty Spice.

All six women will return for the Australian Ninja Warrior semifinals, airing on Nine on Sunday and continuing Monday and Tuesday nights.
