Has the underwear-as-outerwear trend gone too far?

Underwear as outerwear? Now that's a trend making the grannies of the world clutch their pearls in shock.

But whether it's cheeky or chic, celebrities are diving into their lingerie drawers for red carpet inspiration.

Have they found fashion gold or just lost their pants along the way? I'm undecided.

It's a hard no for me personally, but I'm completely obsessed by the celebs who are pulling it off.

Whether it's Kendall Jenner's barely-there bravery, Hayley Bieber's haute couture, or Julia Fox's daring display, these bold moves challenge our notions of fashion and I'm here for it.

This week, Furiosa actress Anya Taylor-Joy lit up the Dior Cruise red carpet in a look that might make even the boldest fashionistas do a double-take.

Anya showed off her pins in a polo neck black mini dress which she teamed with matching sheer suspenders and flat patent leather boots.

She seemed to blur the lines between a night out and a night in. Anya wasn't just wearing suspenders as outerwear; she was making a statement that screamed, "I woke up like this, and I'm ready for the runway! Deal with it!"

For contrast, she elegantly paired her outfit with a chic grey tweed blazer, like a nana who's embracing the risqué. Of course she pulled it off.

She doesn't have to worry about thigh gap, but more a case of her thighs getting cold. If I tried the same outfit on, my thighs would rub together and cause enough friction to power a small country.

Another bold example is singer Sabrina Carpenter, who recently decided to take the phrase "less is more" to heart. She strutted into the MTV Video Music Awards in little more than her undies and a coat.

She wore a see-through black bra and glittery gold shorts and boots teemed with an oversized grey tailored maxi coat that screamed "I might be wearing underwear, but I'm not completely unreasonable – it's chilly out!"

I love her confidence and she made it look incredible.

Then there's Jenna Ortega, who flipped the script at the Emmys.

She took us on a time-traveling journey back to Victorian times, but with a twist - her gown was a see-through Dior number that likely had historical purists fainting onto their fainting couches.

It was crinoline chic meets modern-day transparency. One could argue it was less of "What are you wearing?" and more of "What are you daring?"

And let's not forget the men in this conversation. A few weeks ago, singer Troye Sivan stepped out at the Cannes Film Festival and his outfit, crafted by Prada, featured a white tank top, a cable-knit sweater vest, and checked dress trousers.

However, the real showstopper was his pink satin boxers, which made a cheeky appearance above his trouser waistline.

If the gents started adopting this trend, we might see boxer briefs becoming the new black at formal events.

Now, you might be wondering: with all these celebrities turning lingerie into streetwear, what's next?

Are we just one fashion season away from seeing pyjamas in parliament? Or maybe swim caps and goggles at winter galas, because why not?

Rocking your undies on the outside might not catch on at your local supermarket. And as we are heading into winter, the trend is not ideal for Melbourne but a possibility in Cairns.

But remember, celebrities are different to us. There are no fashion rules for them.

As I chuckle and look on in awe through this wardrobe revolution, it's clear the underwear-as-outerwear trend is more than just a fleeting fashion fad; it's a full-on sartorial rebellion.

So, has the underwear-as-outerwear trend gone too far?

Maybe.

But it's also breathed a whole new life into the question: "What should I wear today?" Because, frankly, it's a small step from wearing your heart on your sleeve to wearing your knickers over your trousers.

Next time you're standing in front of your closet thinking, "Do I dare?" remember, you're just one audacious outfit away from possibly setting the next viral fashion trend – or at least getting a few gasps at your next social gathering.

Plus, if your underwear is now outerwear, you've basically doubled your wardrobe!  Genius.
