Brooke Shields stepping onto a red carpet is an act that's guaranteed to turn heads – and her red carpet this week was no exception.

It wasn't her dress, however, that had everyone talking when she arrived at New York City's Lincoln Centre for Broadway's biggest night.

All eyes were on her shoes.

Shields paired her bright yellow dress – which featured a plunging sequin top with a bow at the bottom of the bodice and a slit at the back of her pleated skirt – with matching Crocs, which usually retail in Australia for around $80.

It's a far cry from the stilettos fans are used to seeing on the ruby rug, and Shields has since taken to Instagram to explain her casual choice of footwear.

"Red carpet three days post foot surgery… what's a girl to do?! Wear [Crocs]. That's what you're to do! 💛🐊🍋," she wrote to her 2.1 million followers this morning, alongside photos of her showing off her clogs on the red carpet.

Shields concluded: "What an honour to present at [the Tony Awards] last night. Such an incredible evening!"

One day before the event, the 59-year-old Chicago and Grease alum shared photos to her Instagram page of both of her feet in braces.

"The feet pics are about to level up… Double foot toe surgery ✔️," she wrote alongside the photo.

It's not the first time Shields' feet have gone under the knife – in 1994, the same year she starred as Rizzo in Grease on Broadway, she had bunion surgery.

"I had to have both feet broken," Shields told The New York Times at the time with a wince. "But now I can wear high heels without three Tylenols."

That was not the case on Sunday night (Monday in Australia) for Shields, who told People on the red carpet: "I got my Crocs! I couldn't do this in heels!"
