Lucia Hawley

As the warmer months roll around, it is time to finally fold away our winter wardrobes and make room for a refreshed summer closet.

The summer season offers the opportunity to take a chance on new and emerging trends, with the international runways setting the standard for what we will be wearing.

Spring 22/23 fashion month season has seen many fashion houses debut collections filled with fabulous new styles – playing with waistlines, unique fabrics and fun textures.

The adoption of these styles by celebrities and influencers alike has cemented their place in the fashion world – ushering in a slew of new trends that we are about to see everywhere.

9Honey speaks with THE ICONIC's Head of Style, Nicole Adolphe, following the online retailer's recent partnership with Klarna, about the five top trends that are making a comeback this summer.

Low rise

"One of the big trends we are about to see is the crop singlet or the corset paired with a low rise pant," Adolphe says.

The fashion industry been gravitating towards the low rise trend for a while, but as the weather heats up in Australia, Adolphe says we will start seeing it on home turf more.

"In winter, it's a little bit hard to wear low rise unless you're going out. I think we'll see more people experimenting with the low rise pant in summer, and also more people getting into that crop singlet or crop top."

"Matching sets are very on trend now – whether it's a top and skirt, or a top and pants, even a printed top and pants, it's big," Adolphe says. "Coming into summer, I think we're going to see the set be worn more as a top and skirt combo."

Adolphe says that matching can be done through fabrics – think linen sets – or through bold colours, like matching cobalt blue or bright yellow.

"It could even be matching a really beautiful print," she adds.

The 'ugly shoe'

Birkenstocks, crocs and ugg slippers have been sported by celebrities and influencers around the globe, with Adolphe saying they are going to be one of the most coveted trend pieces of the season.

"We've seen lots of different celebrities and influencers wearing the 'ugly shoe'," she says. "We've seen them paired with socks throughout winter, but it's trickier to wear them like that in summer so, coming into the warmer months, I think people more people will try out crocs or chunky sandals."

Mismatch dressing

Celebrities like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber have recently leaned into the trend of mismatch dressing, undoubtedly a nod to the early 2000's.

"The whole of Gen Z is basically copying what Bella and Hailey are wearing," Adolphe says. "It may have originally started as the low rise trend on the runway but then everybody has turned to TikTok to see how people are wearing it."

"People are mismatching a sports jacket with a designer skirt, or a pair of sneakers. You're throwing all your things together – picking stuff you've probably already got in your wardrobe and putting it together in a certain way."

Adolphe says that the goal of mismatch dressing is to give a slightly "clashed" look that gives the impression that "you haven't tried too hard."

"Crochet is also going to be big yes for summer," Adolphe predicts. "Whether you decide on a crochet dress or, again, a matching set."

A re-emerging trend from the '70s and '80s, crochet is synonymous with summer style.

Cochet is incredibly versatile and can be worn in the form of a skirt or dress over brightly coloured bathers or even as an accessory, like a crochet woven bag or hat.
