British Vogue's new editor Edward Enninful has shown that predictability won't be his thing, following his stellar debut cover with model of the year Adwoa Aboah with America's singing sweetheart Taylor Swift.

Wearing a voluminous Saint Laurent dress Swift was photographed by Mert and Marcus with dramatic Goth-inspired makeup. It's an edgy look favoured by girl squad BFF Lorde.

"For me, the chance to help transform America’s most fascinating sweetheart was a joy. As we took the pop icon on an epic fashion journey with photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, what struck me most about Taylor was her brilliant sense of humour, but also how, for a woman in her twenties, she has an incredible sense of who she is," Enninful told Vogue UK.

"Even superstars aren’t immune to the power of a great dress. Taylor says she has never seen herself transformed like this before, and I was very touched to see how emotional she was at the end of our shoot day in London."

The dark image marks a departure from Swift’s previous, positively sunny, Vogue covers and have earned the singer’s social media seal of approval.

"Mert and Marcus took these photos for @britishvogue and my album photos for reputation, and it's been such a bonding experience working together so closely and talking so much about what we wanted to make," Swift posted.

"It's been a while since I've done a magazine cover. I'm really happy my first one back was with such wonderful people. #newvogue."

Working with Swift is an astute business decision for Enninful with her latest album Reputation becoming the fastest-selling record in the UK by a female artist in 2017.

Rather than get caught up in an ex-boyfriend probing interview, Swift has escaped any pointed profiling by writing a poem on the subject of reinvention to accompany the 12-page shoot.

It’s all perfect timing with Swift announcing a world tour that takes in Australia with tickets going on sale December 15 for shows in Perth (October 19), Melbourne (October 26), Sydney (November 2) and  Brisbane (November 6).
