Before you even think of contouring or drawing on winged eyeliner, the first step is mastering a flawless base with just the right amount of coverage.

It can be quite the feat to have your foundation and concealer perfectly blended without being cakey. But according to one expert, there's a simple hack that could transform your makeup – and it won't cost you a single cent.

Introducing what artist Katie Jane Hughes calls the "priming your brush method".

And there's no need to rush to the shops, because the method uses two items most likely already in your makeup bag: liquid foundation (or concealer) and a brush.

But the next step is where there's a twist.

Instead of applying the makeup directly to your face and then blending, Hughes puts the product on her hand first and then smears – or "primes" – it into a brush.

From there, she sweeps the brush across her face to apply a base.

"When you prime the brush with the product, that application becomes so much smoother, so much easier, and gives you flawless impeccable coverage without the need of actually blending the product in," she explains.

As for how to apply, Hughes says to start with "flat" areas on the face.

After that, apply what's left on the brush to areas like wrinkles to avoid creasing.

One pump of foundation should cover the entire face, the makeup artist claims.
