Forget going to the salon for a manicure, now you can do it yourself for just $5

Having a fresh set of nails can completely elevate an outfit, but to some, the ordeal of sitting to have them done (not to mention the cost) simply isn't worth it.

Many find the experience of getting their nails done tedious and tiring, plus there's also the fact that a set of acrylics can set you back, on average, around $70.

And if you want nail art, you're looking at $100 plus.

So, it's no wonder that Aussies are looking to alternative options, with a new trend recently surfacing on social media.

It seems that these days, people are turning to store-bought press-on nails rather than a salon manicure.

"I love press-ons, especially well-designed ones that flawlessly flush against your nail and look like the real thing. I love changing out designs more regularly than I can when I'm getting them done," one member of the 9honey team explains.

But it's not just the freedom of press-on nails that Aussies are loving, it's also the cost.

Kmart's range of press-on nails has gone viral online for three reasons: the cost, the variety, and the quality.

While some may be rightly worried that the nails would just fall off in a day or so, social media users are claiming that, if applied right, they can last over two weeks.

For just $5, the OXX Cosmetics range of fake nails comes in all kinds of shapes and styles, with shoppers able to choose from stiletto, coffin, almond and more options, the same as they would if getting nails done in a salon.

TikToker Mya Bertolini claims that her nails last "literally three weeks" when applied properly.

Walking viewers through her process, Bertolini says she first uses a nail file to push her cuticles back, then buffs her nails with the file, before wiping each nail with acetone to "get rid of all the oils on your nail plate".

While Bertolini says she simply uses the glue inside the nail set, others say it's best to purchase a brush-on glue to apply to both the fake nail and your own nail bed.

Despite the popularity of the Kmart range, there are plenty of other stores now stocking press-on nails, with some online brands wholly dedicated to the product.

Stores such as Chemist Warehouse, Priceline and Big W all stock a wide variety of press-on nails with plenty of styles and shapes to choose from.

If you're working with a larger budget, brands such as Gojelle, Candy Claws and Glowie are wholly dedicated to press-on nails with plenty of variety. However, they are on the pricier end, looking at $35 plus for a set.

But even when working on the pricier end of things, press-on nails will still save you plenty in the long run when compared to a salon manicure.

"Not sure how much I've saved since I have so many press-on sets at home, but each set sets me back like $15-$20 at most – while containing multiple sets so I can use them again and again," our resident press-on nails afficionado shares.

"Getting my nails done can cost $90-100 each time – which I usually stretch out to a month or longer, against my nail tech's advice."
