Landing glamorous roles seems to be Penélope Cruz’s current modus operandi.

The Spanish actress -- who has spent most of the year playing Italian designer, Donatella Versace, on the FX series The Assassination of Gianni Versace -- has just been announced as the newest brand ambassador to iconic French fashion house, Chanel.

The role is a perfect fit for the 43-year-old, who attended her first Chanel show in 1999 and is regularly pictured wearing the luxury label on the red carpet.  Her first role will be fronting for their forthcoming Cruise ‘18/19 campaign, shot by creative director Karl Lagerfeld.

"It’s such an iconic brand and Karl is a genius, and I’ve been admiring everything he’s done since I was a little girl, so it’s such a pleasure working with him," Cruz told WWD.

"He’s like the king of fashion and we had a really, really interesting photo shoot, so to be in front of his camera is an adventure."

Cruz officially started her new role yesterday at the brand’s Haute Couture show in Paris, where she channelled another iconic Chanel muse, the late Jackie Kennedy Onassis, in a pink tweed suit dress and white beret.

The Vanilla Sky star took in the brand’s new made-to-fit offerings in the company of other high-profile guests such as Tracee Ellis Ross, Vanessa Paradis and Pharrell.

The show included a historic moment where Australian-Sudanese model, Adut Akech Bior, made history as the second black model to close out the Chanel Couture show. A special appointment that is chosen by Kaiser Karl himself.

With Chanel making diversity a part of their aesthetic on-and-off the runway, Cruz is the perfect addition to the brand.

Born in the working-class town of Alcobendas, Madrid, she struggled to break through to mainstream Hollywood roles in the early part of her career, later becoming the first-ever Spanish actress to win a Best Supporting Actress award at the 2009 Academy Awards for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

She joins a slew of famous faces at Chanel, whose ambassadors include Margot Robbie, Kristen Stewart, Keira Knightley and Lily-Rose Depp.
