Meghan Markle breaks unspoken royal beauty rule

Brooke Campbell

We’ve come to know Meghan Markle for her low-key, minimal makeup look, but the Duchess of Sussex strayed from her signature look this week, rocking a high-voltage rose gold illuminator.

The Suits star sported the bold highlighter, which was paired with a structured blush off-the-shoulder Prada dress, as she attended the Young Leaders Awards at Buckingham Palace for the with her husband Prince Harry and the Queen.

While the former actress hasn’t broken any royal protocol with her bold cheeks, there does seem to be an unspoken rule that the royal family can't wear highlighter. We are yet to see Markle's sister-in-law Kate Middleton, or Queen Elizabeth stepping out with a similar look, instead choosing softer, more neutral tones.

For previous royal events, Markle has only added a hint of blush to her cheeks, and avoided anything too showy.

Twitter loved seeing the newly-crowned royal showing off a more daring beauty look.

"Oh My God look at that glow," commented one user.

While another wrote; "I don't love this Prada look from Meghan Markle, but I do love her highlighter."

"Out of the box for a royal, but Meghan can pull off any look," observed another.

While it’s unclear which highlighter Markle used to shine bright like a diamond, the Twitter page Meghan Markle Style has guessed the Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat highlighter is the one in question.

Meanwhile, according to his Instagram page, Markle’s makeup artist for her wedding, Daniel Martin, favours Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstar Bronze & Glow set, as well as the Dior Backstage Glow Face Palette as his go-to's.

If you're not sure where to start, check out these five highlighters, all guaranteed to give you the Meghan Markle rose glow.
