Layered necklaces are a jewellery trend that has had continuous comebacks over the years, but with each layering renaissance comes a common pet peeve — having a host of cute necklaces that you wish you could layer together, but because they're the same length, it's hard to do so.

Well, thanks to Toni May jewellery designer Laura Byrne, that pet peeve is no longer. Taking to Instagram, the designer and podcast host shared her hack for wearing any necklace as a choker without needing to buy a shorter chain, or the necklaces getting tangled.

"As a jewellery designer I've picked up a few nifty tricks over the past decade — this is one of my favourites," Byrne captioned her video. Watch above.

"I realised yesterday when I was showing a customer and her eyes almost popped out of her head that maybe a lot of people aren't familiar with it. Well here you go 🥰 I hope y'all go forth and layer like a boss," Byrne's caption continued.

In the video, Laura holds up two gold necklaces that have the same chain lengths, before attaching the lobster clasp of one necklace to the extension chain of the other necklace.

"You're gonna have one long, continuous necklace, which you're gonna take and wrap around your neck twice," Byrne says as she demonstrates.

She joins the lobster clasp of one to the loops in the other, and then wraps it around her neck twice, before closing the other lobster clasp over the remaining free extension loops of the other necklace. Instagram

Byrne wraps the two necklaces — which are now just one long chain — around her neck twice, before securing the remaining lobster clip to the other extension chain of the other necklace.

"Make sure you've got your pendants at the front so you can shimmy them around," Byrne says as she manoeuvres the pendants so they're in line together at the front of her neck.

Byrne then shows how with this hack, you can adjust the lengths of the chains easily.

"You can pull one of them long, or you can pull one of them short, and there you go. One's a choker, and one's a long length."
