Jenny Kee's new beginning

Elle McClure

Jenny Kee lives large. She makes every room instantly her own, commanding attention with her rainbow outfits, cat-eye fuschia frames and signature lip colour (MAC's Ruby Woo). Then, there's the colourful life she's lived both in Sydney and in 1960s London (not to mention the impressive bit players which include John Lennon, Keith Richards and Eric Clapton). But the iconic Australian designer now says, "The older I get, the smaller I want to be."

Her latest collection, 'A New Beginning', was created in collaboration with The Woolmark Company and is true to that mantra. All eight styles are a limited edition, with only 50 of each available for purchase from selected boutiques locally and internationally. Those eight styles include reproductions of two of her most iconic pieces: the famed Koala jumper worn by Princess Diana when she visited Australia in the '80s (so popular, Kee had to release the knitting pattern in the Australian Women's Weekly just to appease demand), and the Jenny jumper, of which there has only ever been one in the world - until now. Jenny claims it was this jumper that saved her daughter's life during the 1977 Granville rail disaster that killed 83 people.

At the launch of the collection at Sydney's Parlour X, we spoke to Kee about what inspires her, collaborating with The Woolmark Company and ageing colourfully.
