Follow up the Apple Watch – the Apple Ring?

Anne Fullerton

The Hermès Apple Watch brought a more high end feel to the tech offering.

The Apple Watch is either a flop or a roaring success, depending on who you ask - but a hung jury hasn’t stopped Apple from planning its follow up to the smart watch… the Apple Ring.

Documents filed with the United States Patent & Trademark Office for a "Ring Computing Device" last week show that the tech giant may indeed have a ring-sized version of the watch in the works, describing the device as a "an external electronic device with a finger-ring-mounted touchscreen that includes a computer processor".

Like the watch, it includes a touch screen, voice and motion input, a camera and the ability to control other electronic devices.

If all that doesn't get your heart racing, then perhaps imagining the fine jewellery potential might.

Just as the Apple alliance with Hermès helped bolster the watch's fashion credentials, a partnership with Tiffany & Co. or Cartier could work similar magic for the ring. (We can easily imagine early adopter Beyoncé sporting a diamond encrusted Lorraine Schwartz version on one of her many St Tropez yacht expeditions.)

Of course, filing a patent doesn't mean the watch is bound for production, now or ever.

All we have for the time being are grainy sketches from the Patent and Trademark Office and our imaginations.
