Hillary Clinton has been cross-examined about Benghazi, berated for her email habits and dragged over the coals over shady real estate investments.

But the controversy that’s generated the most column inches throughout her career may just be her commitment to giving the pantsuit its place on the world stage.

In 2011, celebrity stylist Tim Gunn publicly quipped that the “unflattering” tailored pantsuits were a device to cover Clinton's thick ankles, and over the years everything from her hairstyle to her weight has been put under the microscope.

Hillary, for her part, has made light of the sartorial debate, describing herself as a “pantsuit aficionado” in her Twitter bio, referring to supporters as the “sisterhood of the travelling pantsuit” and stocking a printed Everyday Pantsuit Tee in her campaign merch store. (Other self-aware swag includes a Hillary 2016 pint glass made from “100% smashed glass ceilings”.)

Fitting then, that the 2016 presidential hopeful’s inaugural Instagram post is a shot of red, white and blue pantsuits captioned "Hard choices".

It's masterful hater shutdown that manages to say "I see your sexist nonsense and pay it no mind" while simultaneously implying that she is a savvy leader who loves America. The only way it could get more perfect is if a bald eagle swooped through the open window and perched on the clothes rack.
