Former Vogue editor slams Helena Christensen’s clothing choices

Helena Christensen dated Michael Hutchence, helped launch Chris Isaak to fame in the music video for ‘Wicked Game’, and was a catwalk stalwart with Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington in the '90s.

However, not even supermodels are free from outdated, caustic comments about their appearance.

Former British Vogue editor in-chief Alexandra Shulman, who was at the helm of the publication from 1992-2017, has taken the 50-year-old to task for wearing a lacy bustier to Gigi Hadid’s 24th birthday party last week.

On Sunday, the British journalist penned an opinion piece for The Daily Mail, in which she stated the Danish model was “too old” to be wearing a “tacky” corset in public.

“Why last week, at the age of 50, did she decide to pitch up at Gigi Hadid’s 24th birthday party in a tacky, black lace bustier?” wrote Shulman.

“She did it to show she’s not past it. She’s not going gentle into any good night when it comes to getting her share of the paparazzi’s attention. It’s understandable but unwise.”

The 51-year-old went on to state women of a certain age should “call time” on dressing in certain clothing types.

“You don’t have to condemn yourself to trench coats, navy blazers and a crisp white shirt once you hit the big Five-O. But, even so, surely you should call time on Ann Summers style,” she continued.

“We might like to think that 70 is the new 40 and 50 the new 30 but our clothes know the true story.”

Christensen wasted no time hitting back at Shulman’s remarks, posting a photo of herself wearing the same corset alongside designer Camilla Stærk and Tali Lennox to Instagram.

“Let’s continue to elevate and support each other, all you beautiful, smart, fun, sexy, hardworking, talented, nurturing women out there,” she captioned the snap, along with the hashtag #ooopssheworeabustieragain.

The supermodel’s famous friends applauded her and backed her choice to dress in any clothing styles she pleases.

“You are beautiful inside and out,” commented current British Vogue editor-in-chief, Edward Enniful.

“She should be ashamed of herself. You are a goddess,” wrote Linda Evangelista.

“Gorgeous in and out!” commented Angela Bassett.
