Beautiful, dark, twisted fantasy

"I don’t do drugs. I am drugs," said surrealist artist Salvador Dali.

And he's right, in a manner of speaking. Decades after Dali changed the course of art, it was clear that many of the designers at couture week are still under the influence of his hallucinatory canvases, bizarrely re-imagined figures and distinctive melting landscapes.

Schiaparelli’s floating eye brooches directly referenced Dali’s The Eye of Time brooch, a piece he collaborated on with the house in 1949.

At Margiela, models sprouted phantom mouths on their foreheads and throats, while eyebrows grew into almost botanical shapes.

Also along for the surreal trip was Viktor & Rolf. Known for their boundary-pushing "Fashion Art", the house referenced everyone from post-impressionist Matisse to the cubism's Picasso in a curiously evolving collection of body parts and faces.

Chanel referred to Picasso's 1932 sculpture Head Of A Woman for hair and beauty inspiration, and even Valentino’s ethereal mood board contained a nod to the surrealist dancer Martha Graham.
