Cindy Crawford recreates her most iconic look at Met Gala

This year’s Met Gala 'Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination' took a nostalgic turn with the arrival of '90s supermodel, Cindy Crawford.

The 51-year-old made her way up the steps of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art draped in a red plunging Versace gown, reminiscent of the dress of the same colour and brand that she donned to the 1991 Academy Awards.

Although her date for the night may be different- husband Rande Gerber as opposed to ex-husband Richard Gere- the gown’s fitted silhouette, vibrant aesthetic and overall sex appeal, meant Crawford’s look made just as much of an impact as it did in 1991.

The mother-of-two paired the gown with a pair of strappy Manolo Blahnik heels and diamond earrings accessorised with red rubies. She even channelled her makeup look from 27 years ago, rocking loose waves, a subtle smoky eye and nude glossy lip.
 
Crawford and the Italian fashion house defined much of the 1990s 'super' obsession.

Her appearance in the original red frock in 1991, was the first-time she and her Gere had stepped out as a couple , which made headlines all around the world. It also cemented the late Gianni Versace’s influence as a major global fashion player.

Variety's Complete Book of Oscar Fashion stated that " Cindy Crawford lives up to the term "supermodel" in this chili-pepper hot Versace gown. She and handsome hubby-to-be Richard Gere could have been the hottest couple at the awards show.”
 
The designer gown was also voted by The Telegraph as the 12th greatest red carpet gown of all time. The dress went under the hammer at a charity auction in New York City in 1999 where it sold for $16,859.
