Pharrell Williams signs on with Chanel

Harriet Armstrong

Singer Pharrell Williams, is known for his sleek personal style and for being something of a trend setter, if you are partial to an oversized hat. So it makes sense that when the house of Chanel decided to feature a man in a handbag campaign for the first time in its 108-year history, his was the name that came to mind.

The Gabrielle, a handbag named after the fashion house’s founder - yes, you might know her as Coco, but her real name was in fact Gabrielle - will be released in April. Creative Director, Karl Lagerfeld, created the campaign to appeal to both men and women reflecting Chanel’s new stance and encouragement of unisex fashion.

Speaking to WWD, he said he wished to show that the bag can be worn "in many different circumstances." He added it was not very feminine in the sense of ‘being chi chi’. Which, we’re assuming, is why it makes perfect sense to have a man in the campaign.

But Pharrell, is not the only face attached to it. Chanel favourites Cara Delevingne, Kristen Stewart and Caroline de Maigret also feature in the campaign for the bag, a structured lightweight tote. If the bag’s cutting-edge look appeals, then we have good news. It won’t be the only item in this coveted new Chanel line.

Indeed, 2017 looks set to be the year of Gabrielle with a perfume, jewellery and watch collections to debut later in the year.
