Cannes Film Festival bans certain looks for the 2025 event - and it could cause chaos for many celebrity attendees

The Cannes Film Festival gets underway this week, and we can expect to see some spectacular looks on the world famous red carpet.

But there are certain looks we definitely won't see, with the French film festival listing a strict dress code in their online guidelines.

Even the biggest celebrities are expected to follow the dress code and could even be expected to be banned from walking the red carpet if they break it.

Any overly complicated looks or any looks that observe the popular nude dress trend are not allowed at the event as organisers prioritise "decency" and efficiency.

According to Cannes Film Festival's official website, the dress code for the Grand Théâtre Lumière gala screenings, which are attended by the artistic teams, require evening wear, meaning attendees should wear a long dress or tuxedo.

Alternatively, guests are permitted to wear "a little black dress," a cocktail dress, a dark-coloured pantsuit [or] a dressy top with black pants," per oranisers.

For shoes, guests are permitted to wear "elegant shows and sandals with or without a heel" but strictly no sneakers.

For those wearing a suit, it must be black or navy blue with a bow-tie or dark-coloured tie.

While elegant fashion is encouraged, the big poofy skirts and long trains that we have seen on the Cannes red carpets of yesteryear will not be permitted in the name of efficiency.

"Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted," organisers explain.

And while near-nudity and sheer looks have been a mainstay at many red carpet events in recent years, Cannes has a strict policy against it

"For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival," organisers explain.

The parameters of the dress code are not entirely clear as to how voluminous is too voluminous or what level of sheerness constitutes nudity.

There were several voluminous looks at last year's Cannes film festival that appear to go against this year's fashion rules.

German model and actress Pia Wurtzbach wore a Cinderella-esc gown at the event with a spectacular skirt.

Meanwhile, model Ève Gilles wore a bright pink ballgown with what appeared to be a hoop skirt and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore a spectacularly voluminous dress in sparkly teal and silver.

Models Elsa Hosk and Leonie Hanne and actresses Frédérique Bel, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Deepti Sadhwani each wore metres-long trains at last year's festival.

Heidi Klum also wore an impressive train at the esteemed French event last year.

Going by the strict dress code of this year's event, if each of these stars wore the same outfit this year they may expect to be turned away.

"The Festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit Red Carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules," organisers say.
