A farmer's elaborate proposal was caught on Google Maps

A proposal is one of those special moments in life that many wish they could immortalise and remember forever. And for one German couple that wish came true, in a very public way.

Last year, Steffen Schwarz, a part-time farmer from Germany decided to pop the question to his girlfriend in a pretty unconventional way.

He got the idea from a client who hired him to plant a corn maze in a field, using a special seeding machine to plant the crop only in certain areas.

Schwarz later used the machine to spell out "Will you marry me?" in giant letters on an empty field. It took a lot of planning, he told local German outlet hessenschau.de. He had to plant the entire field with corn plants, leaving spaces that spelled out the letters. The machine he used was only designed to plant in long, straight, lines, so it wasn't an easy job.

Schwarz told her that he'd seen a wild boar, and asked her to look at the field with a drone. All his hard work paid off when she immediately said yes.

And just as the excitement from the proposal wore off, Schwarz's aunt stumbled across the field on Google Maps, complete with the romantic message.

Schwarz and his fiancée are getting married in June this year.
