Dr Katrina Warren solves mystery of missing white dog poo

The '70s and '80s were a time of wonder, with many nuggets of nostalgia we fondly look back on now.

But there is another relic that has all but disappeared – white dog poo.

Not to worry, as one of Australia's renowned pet experts Dr Katrina Warren, has solved the mystery of the missing white dog poo.

In a TikTok video posted to her account, she answers the unlikely question she has been seeing popping up on social media.

"Back in the '70s and the '80s, white dog poo was really common," she said, explaining, "Dog poo goes white when dogs eat a diet that's high in calcium.

"So back in those days dogs were eating a lot more bones, they were getting more table scraps and the commercial pet foods had a lot of bone meal in them so that was why we were seeing more white dog poop.

She also added, "In those days there wasn't the same obligation that we have now to pick up your dog poo, I think dog poo was left out a lot more and it does go white if it's left in the sun and it has the right humidity conditions.

"So I think there was just a lot more poo left around as well, whereas these days we're better at picking it up."

She added in the caption, "It's still out there, just not as common – this one was on my morning walk," referring to the backdrop of the video, which featured mounds of white dog poo.

It turns out this is a topic keeping pet owners up at night, with one sharing, "Oh my gosh I was just thinking about this while I was trying to sleep last night!"

Another added, "There is a white poop out the front on the curb near my house. I had major flashbacks when I saw it."

One commenter said, "Oh well my dogs poo turns white he's on a raw food diet."

One shared a whimsical belief from their childhood, "When I was a kid, I used to believe that white dog poo was done by white dogs."

Dr Katrina has also explained why dogs and puppies eat poo.

"The behaviour of eating faeces is called coprophagia and is quite common among puppies and dogs," she said.

"Though consuming their faeces is generally harmless, you should prevent them from eating the faeces of other animals, as it may contain parasites, viruses, or toxins that pose a health risk," she advises.

"For many puppies, eating poo is just a part of exploring the world around them," Warren says, "Curiosity drives them to investigate and taste various objects, including faeces.

"Fortunately, most puppies tend to outgrow this behaviour over time. However, some adult dogs continue to consume faeces, many just appear to like the taste."
