A kitten has been given a very fitting name after it was found abandoned inside a mailbox.

The ginger and white cutie was discovered by a post office in the US after he'd apparently been shoved through the slot of a mailbox.

The Fayette Regional Humane Society in Ohio has shared a Facebook post stating that one of their agents was called to the post office after the kitten was found.

"I've seen kittens stuck in many places, but this was new for me!" said Chief Humane Agent Brad Adams. "I'm sure it was a bit of a shock to hear meowing coming from the mailbox."

The kitten, which is around 10 weeks old, was "scared but unharmed" when he was found and has already "stolen the hearts" of the shelter staff.

Due to the nature of his rescue, the kitten has been named Special Delivery.

"We can only imagine how scared he must have been, trapped alone in that dark mailbox," said Adams. "But Special Delivery has a bright future ahead. He already meows for attention and wants to be picked up and cuddled by everyone who passes by."

Executive Director of the shelter, Dr. Lee Schrader described the kitten as their "most precious special delivery," adding that they're "so fortunate" that he was found before anything awful happened.

"Just as a reminder, if you find a kitten, please call your nearest shelter for advice," Dr. Schrader said. "Kittens can't be mailed!"
