Joe Biden's dog Major to get 'indoguration' from shelter he was adopted from

US president-elect Joe Biden is not the only one getting some fanfare as he enters the White House — his rescue dog, Major, is being honoured by the shelter he came from.

Biden and his wife Jill adopted Major, a German shepherd, in 2018 from the Delaware Humane Association (DHA).

The shelter and Pumpkin Pet Insurance are now hosting a virtual event to celebrate the first shelter dog in the White House. The shelter is calling it the "largest virtual party for dogs."

The "indogeration" event is scheduled for January 17, three days before Inauguration Day, and will be hosted by Jill Martin of NBC's Today.

A $10 minimum donation is required to join the Zoom event and all proceeds go to the DHA.

Though Major is the first shelter dog in the White House, he is not the first rescue.

Before Major there was Yuki, a mixed breed pup abandoned by his owner at a gas station in Texas and rescued by President Lyndon B. Johnson's daughter Luci. Bill Clinton's family cat, Socks, was also a rescue.

Major won't be the only canine in the White House during the Biden administration, either.

The president-elect also has Champ, another German shepherd who has been in the family since 2008.

One of the Biden campaign slogans ahead of the 2020 election was "Let's put a dog back in the White House!" — a reference to Donald Trump having no pets during his four-year term.

Biden's team shared photos of the family's pets and other adorable pooches wearing pet clothing with the Democrat's name on them.

Trump's predecessor Barack Obama had two Portuguese water dogs named Bo and Sunny living at the White House during his two terms.

The Obamas didn't get their dogs until after they moved into the Washington residence, and shared their search for the perfect pets with the public.

Dogs have been a mainstay in the White House's history, but they aren't the only animals to have taken up residence with former presidents.

Thomas Jefferson didn't have dogs, but had a mockingbird and two bear cubs, while John Quincey Adams had an alligator.

Meanwhile, Abraham Lincoln had two cats, a rabbit, a turkey, ponies and a pig in addition to his numerous dogs.
