Every Australian dog owner knows the panic that comes with the summer months.

Sure, the sun is out and we're having a great time, until we turn around to see our four-legged friend huffing and puffing from the heat.

One solution we often run to is to turn the air con on and sit our pooch down in front of it, but that can get expensive.

And in this cost of living crisis, it's something I personally can't afford.

So, to keep my needy golden retriever Nelson cool in the Sydney Summer, I've had to come up with alternative solutions.

And I think I've found the perfect one.

Everyone would always suggest to me that I should buy Nelson a blow up pool, but anyone who's met my dog would know that's a horrible idea – he'd destroy that thing in seconds.

Plus, blow up pools are lowkey getting up there in price these days.

But I knew there was something in the pool idea, so I did a little investigating. And eventually I came across the perfect solution.

Let me introduce you to the $14 clam shell sandpit from Bunnings.

It's made of sturdy plastic, it's not deep enough that he can get himself stuck (yes this is definitely something my dog would do), and it's also blue which is one of the two colours that dogs can see, which in my head makes it more fun for him.

Now, it may not be big enough for him to paddle around and exhaust himself, but it is big enough for him to lie down in the water and stay cool while the sun is out.

Nelson is also not a big fan of the water or swimming (yes he is a retriever, no I don't know what went wrong) so it's the perfect amount of water to keep him cool without scaring him off.

All you have to do is put the sandpit somewhere outside, fill it with water, and you've saved yourself a hefty electricity bill and helped prevent your dog getting heatstroke.
