The popular fruit that should only be given to your dog in moderation

Bananas are the unsung hero of smoothies, baked goods and a tasty fruit salad.

They're loaded with health benefits for us, so it would be safe to assume they're OK to give to our four-legged friends... right?

It turns out there's one natural ingredient in bananas that makes them more of an occasional treat rather than a regular addition to your dog's diet.

We've spoken to Dr. Lynsey Etheridge, Regional Clinical Director at Greencross Vets for everything you need to know before feeding your dog a banana.

Can dogs eat bananas?

The answer is a "yes, they absolutely can" from Dr. Etheridge.

They're a healthy snack for our pups as well – but in moderation.

Like many fruits, bananas are naturally high in sugar which is why they should "only be given occasionally" as a dog snack.

"When introducing bananas or any new food to your pet, it's always best to start with a small amount and monitor for any signs of digestive upset," the vet recommends.

How much banana can a dog eat?

Not only should bananas be eaten in moderation, but the size of your dog impacts the recommended amount per day.

According to Dr. Etheridge, small dogs (which she specifies as under 15kg) should only have up to a quarter of a banana each day.

Meanwhile dogs over 15kg can have double that, eating up to half of a banana daily.

The vet doubles down that the fruit "should not replace a balanced diet" for dogs.

"Offering them a few times a week rather than daily is a good way to ensure your dog benefits from the nutrients without consuming too much sugar."

Do bananas have any health benefits for dogs?

Just like for us, bananas are a good source of potassium, vitamin B6, and dietary fibre.

Dr. Etheridge explains these can "support muscle function, brain health, and digestion."

"If fed in appropriate amounts, bananas can be a fun and nutritious addition to your pup's snack options," she adds.

Can dogs eat banana peels?

The short answer is that it's not recommended.

"While banana peels are not toxic, they are very fibrous and can be difficult for dogs to digest," Dr. Etheridge says.

She explains feeding your dog the peel can lead to digestive upset, constipation, or even blockages. This is especially an issue for small dogs.

On the occasion your dog does find and eat a banana peel, the vet says to watch out for vomiting or have difficulty passing a stool.

She also says to consult your vet if needed.
