Can my cat eat peanut butter?

Despite some cats enjoying the taste, peanut butter is not generally recommended.

Peanut butter lacks nutritional value for cats, and some ingredients found in it can be harmful to them.

When peanuts are processed into peanut butter, additional ingredients, such as salt, sugar and xylitol, an artificial sweetener that can be toxic to animals, including cats, are often added. It is crucial to avoid feeding your cat any products that contain xylitol, as it can have severe consequences for their health.

Peanut butter can also lead to gastrointestinal upset in cats resulting in vomiting, diarrhea, gas, and stomach pains.

While cats can technically consume natural peanut butter (with no additives), avoiding it is best.

Can my cat eat prawns?

Prawns contain protein and fats that may appeal to your feline friend, and feeding your cat the occasional treat of prawns is generally safe as long as they do not contain harmful ingredients like chilli or garlic, which are toxic to cats.

Feed your cooked prawns rather than raw ones. Cooking eliminates potential bacteria or parasites that may be present in raw seafood, making it safer for your cat to consume.

However, it's important to note not all cats can tolerate prawns, especially those with seafood allergies. If it's your cat's first time eating prawns, monitor their reaction closely; if your cat shows signs of an adverse reaction such as vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing or itchy skin after consuming prawns it's essential to stop feeding them prawns and consult with your veterinarian.

Prawns should only be given as an occasional treat, not a significant part of your cat's diet. Their main meals should be nutritionally balanced cat food that meets their dietary requirements.

Can my cat eat yoghurt?

Plain yoghurt can be safe for some cats to eat as an occasional treat, and many love it, but there are some things to consider. Cats are lactose intolerant, meaning they lack the necessary enzymes to digest lactose properly; the sugar in milk and dairy products can cause stomach upsets and diarrhoea.

Only offer plain, unsweetened yoghurt with no added flavours, colours, or sugar. Avoid yogurts with artificial sweeteners like xylitol, as xylitol is toxic to cats.

It's also advisable to introduce yoghurt gradually into your cat's diet and monitor for any signs of digestive upset.
