'This Mother's Day I am accepting that mums can't really have it all'

Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh

Mother's Day is here and boy am I lucky that I get to celebrate it with my three amazing boys - my husband, cheeky two-year-old and baby boy.

And while I am excited for a day of pampering and receiving the necklace my husband thinks I didn't see get delivered this week, I have given myself a pretty great gift this year.

That gift isn't time alone or a spa voucher, though those things sound divine, it's accepting the fact that as a mum, I truly CAN'T have it all.

And that is OK.

The last two years have been a bit of a whirlwind. I fell pregnant with my first Noah, and then was then consumed by post-natal blues.

I overcame that challenge and fell into a bit of a routine with the new baby, to then returned back to work when he was nine-months-old as I love what I do here at 9Honey Parenting.

In among that, I connected with thousands of other mums on Instagram by sharing my new chaotic mum life and started a bit of new social media role.

Then I decided it was time for a second, because I wanted to kind of 'keep the ball rolling' on the baby stage.

I had my second when my first was 17-months-old and spent my maternity leave loving every minute of NOT being attacked by post-natal blues.

And now I am back at work again. Part-time work, a 10-month-old, a two-year-old toddler and a few other things on the side.

I wrote a cheeky children book for mums and bubs called My Mummy Loves Fudge.

Where did I find the time you ask?

I didn't have the time. I used up the time I was meant to be spending with my kids and on myself. And this was my big mistake.

With work, dealing with constant sickness, daycare celebrations, family dinners, girls' catch-ups, birthdays, weddings, avoiding screen time, taking the kids to the park for fresh air, walking the dog, cooking dinner, not letting our house collate centimeters of dusk, washing clothes, washing more clothes, washing bottles, washing the dishes...

... life with two kids is bloody hard.

And while I thought I could balance it all. Be on top if it. Have the clean house, manage the kids' schedules, keep us all healthy and happy and even keep my own cup full. I am realising I can't.

Something's got to give.

I am tired. I get to the end of the day and I want to just crash. I wake up in the morning and am overwhelmed by the 400 things I have on my to do list.

So this week, when I ended up in hospital with a migraine that my husband is convinced was caused by me being too overwhelmed, I realised something.

This time in my life will be short-lived. My kids will only be this young, this cute and this grotty for a few precious years.

When I am older and they're in their rooms with their doors shut and don't want anything to do with their mum, then I can do the things I try so hard to do now.

Keep my house clean because I can't stand mess, tick things off my to-do list because it gives me anxiety when they linger, reply to messages as soon as they come through so I don't forget, make it to every social event so I don't feel like I am disappointing my friends.

Then I'll have the spare time to spend hours laughing at funny Instagram reels and write children's books in the middle of the night.

But now. All of those things can sit on the backburner. Because it's time to prioritise family time. Chaotic, wild, exhausting, precious, crazy family time. With a sprinkle of me-time and a side of messy house.

Accepting this has lifted the biggest weight off my shoulders. Just the kind of massage I need on Mother's Day.

However, I will not say no to an actual massage voucher either...
