The Harry and Meghan effect: Archie enters the top 10 most popular baby names

Despite their grand exit out of the UK, it seems Harry and Meghan Markle are still a major influence on parents in the country.

Archie has officially broken the top 10 most popular baby names in England and Wales for 2020, landing in ninth place with 2,944 babies claiming the name.

Data from the Office of National Statistics, showed a few other royal names make the list including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's George officially becoming the second-most popular name for boys.

Some royal names however, aren't as popular.

This year Harry surprisingly dropped in the rankings to eighth place, and Charles didn't even make the top 10, coming in twelfth.

Last year there were 3,355 babies named Charles, while in 2020 that number dropped to a total of 2,810.

Lilibet, chosen by Harry and Meghan for their daughter born in June, 2021, did not appear on the list of top girls' names at all though Lily did come in seventh place.

Oliver is the most popular boy's name in England and Wales, holding that title since 2015.

Two boy's names that have increased in popularity over the past year have been Arthur and Noah, which rounded out the top 5.

Muhammad, Leo, Oscar and Jack were also favourites for UK parents.

When it comes to girls' names, Olivia is the most popular with 3,640 little ones registering under the name in the last year.

Amelia, Isla, Ava and Mia followed in popularity.

Official birth data revealed character names from the popular Netflix program Sex Education had a major influence on the top 100, with Maeve and Otis seeing a surge in registrations.

While previously well-loved names Margaret, Rebecca, Paul and John are loosing interest from parents.
