When does school start back? Our state-by-state guide

In the post-Christmas and New Year haze, many parents are too busy focusing on making it through the school holidays to pin down the exact start date for term one.

From juggling work around holiday camps to shopping for school supplies, trawling through school newsletters to find when they're due back is often left until the final days.

And good luck to those who do, with the date varying between states and, it seems, between individual schools.

So 9Honey decided to do the hard work for you, by outlining the first day of term for government schools in each state - although we strongly advise a quick check of your individual school, just to avoid rocking up to an empty campus.

For Catholic and Independent school dates, check the relevant Catholic education websites for your state/area or check with your individual school.

New South Wales

• Most students (residing in the eastern division) return on Tuesday, January 31.
• Those who live in the western division (taking in Broken Hill, Wee Waa, Walgett, Rankins Springs, Louth, Hay, Gol Gol, Deniliquin and Ashford), will start back on Tuesday, February 7.

Queensland

• The school term officially kicks off January 23.

Victoria

• Students are due to return on Monday, January 30.

South Australia

• Get those bags packed for Tuesday, January 31.

Australian Capital Territory

• New students start on Monday, January 30.
• Continuing students return on Tuesday, January 31.

Western Australia:

• Schools open on Wednesday, February 1.

Tasmania:

• The last state to start back, students return on Wednesday, February 8.

Northern Territory

• Only one week left for Territorians, with the first date back Tuesday, January 31.
