Paramedic demonstrates reason why swimming nappies are important

A paramedic's demonstration of swim nappies versus regular ones in the pool shows the importance of choosing the right clothing for your baby when swimming.

"Ever wondered why you should use a swim nappy every time your little one swims?" Nikki, who runs the Tiny Hearts Education Instagram Page, asks.

She holds up a regular nappy that was soaked in water for five minutes before letting it go into the pool, where it sinks straight to the bottom.

"If your little one was wearing that, they'd also be on the bottom," she says.

She then drops a swim nappy that had also been soaked in water for 5 minutes into the pool, but it is still able to float.

"A regular nappy is designed to absorb water and can quickly add 2kg of weight to your little one. This is dangerous in the water and can pull your child to the bottom very quickly! Remember, remove the nappy and go without or wear a swim nappy!" she continued in the captions.

Parents were thankful for the demonstration.

"I never even thought about it like that," said one parent in the comments. "Such a simple thing everyone needs to be made aware of," agreed another.

"Ah I never thought about this! I just assumed it was because it was uncomfortable!!" said another parent.

"Regular nappies also explode in the water once they've reached max absorption which doesn't take long!" added another commenter.

Some added that swim nappies can also be reused.

"A disposable swim nappy can be rinsed/washed and reused!" said one.

"As long as bub doesn't have a bowel movement in there, you can stick it in the washing machine and use it multiple times! One pack lasted me both my kids over a few years with left overs!" added another mum.

Others recommended reusable nappies instead.

"Even better.. use a swim cloth diaper, cheaper, reusable and good for the planet," suggested one commenter.
