Officiant's sweet gesture to deaf flower girl

There is no doubt little Riley was excited to be a flower girl at her uncle's wedding. However her joy must have doubled when she saw the wedding officiant do something incredible especially for her.

Riley is profoundly deaf. In an effort to make sure the 22-month-old did not miss out on anything at the wedding, the officiant - her new aunt's brother - learnt sign language and used it during the ceremony.

The sweet moment brought Christina Pacala, Riley's mother, to tears. "I was a bridesmaid and I started sobbing so hard when I realised he wasn't just moving his hands - he was signing the word 'family,'" Pacala, 34, told TODAY Parents.

It has now done the same thing to countless people around the world after Pacala shared the footage online.

Pacala said she had no idea the officiant had learnt ASL to incorporate into the ceremony.

"I later learned that he quietly learned some ASL to incorporate into the wedding ceremony," Pacala said in the Instagram reel caption.

"I already knew my brother was marrying an incredible girl from a wonderful family, but this act of inclusion meant absolutely everything to us."

Pacala also runs a wildly popular parenting TikTok account which has over 150,000 followers. The account documents Pacala's journey in learning ASL and her daughter Riley's own personal deaf journey.

In one video Pacala says that her daughter is "profoundly deaf" and cannot hear anything without her cochlear implant. 

This is why the officiant's 'quiet' gesture at the wedding was a big deal to the Pacala family. "It signifies that the two families that joined on this day recognise that they have a deaf family member and they'll make an effort to include, love and support her," Pacala says in the original caption.

Commenters had all sorts of emotional responses to the beautiful video.

"She is surrounded by such love," one commenter said.

Another commenter who was moved to tears added, "this made me cry! How thoughtful and beautiful."
