‘Not So Mumsy’ founder shares raw insight into surviving a miscarriage

Ashley Kent

When Not So Mumsy founder, Marcia Leone, first attempted to get pregnant she admits it was as easy. However, three years after the birth of her first son Archie, she realised she was having fertility issues.

Rather than falling into a heap and hiding her despair from the world, Marcia decided to share her story in the hope that her platform would help other women going through the same thing.

“Archie was a pretty full on baby, so we waited until he was three before we tried for more,” Marcia tells 9Honey.

“I fell pregnant straight away. But then while my husband was overseas I began getting cramps and started bleeding.”

Marcia was home alone with three-year-old Archie who was sick with a fever at the time, and couldn’t get on to her husband, describing the night as “traumatic”.

“I was just bleeding out on the bathroom floor,” she recalls.

“I took myself to the hospital the next day and I had to have a blood transfusion I had lost that much blood.”

A little while after, Marcia decided to share what had happened with her followers, and much to her surprise received huge response from other women had similar experiences. Marcia decided from then on, to keep the women in the loop of her pregnancy journey.

Shortly after she fell pregnant again but unfortunately suffered another miscarriage – forcing her to turn to IVF.

Two years later, she welcomed her second child, her daughter Poppy.

“It’s a very full on experience. It’s very lonely and Isolating as many women know,” says the mother of two.

“A lot of people share it once they come out the other side and have a happy ending.

“I was very doubtful at times that I would have a happy ending, so I thought I’m going to share it while I’m in it.”

While Marcia describes herself as guarded when it came to bonding with her daughter in the first few months of pregnancy, she admits that she did a lot of work on her mental health during her period of infertility which helped her move forward.

“I had a lot of anxiety after my first miscarriage,” she explains.

“I had worked myself to a point where I was quite calm and relaxed and I thought what will be, will be.

“I’ve done everything I can, if the baby is meant to be here the baby will be here. That was my mind set.”

Marcia says that she encourages women who are struggling through similar issues to talk about it, whether it be with someone you know or someone on the internet.

“You don’t have to internalise and suffer silently,” she says.

“It’s ok to feel devastated, it’s okay to feel your emotions. And it’s okay to try again when you’re ready.”

Marcia now uses her platform to help women all over who may be doing it tough, and with the help of swimwear company Infamous Swimwear, is aiming to close the gap.

“I feel very grateful to create awareness and to share that it’s not all designer prams and roses,” the founder explains.

“There are a lot of women that are doing it tough and we need to show support.”
