Mum baffled after daughter returns from school with new hairstyle: 'I didn't notice for ages'

A mum has been left baffled after discovering her school-aged daughter had her hairstyle changed by a teacher during the day.

The five-year-old was sent off to school with her hair in two bunches, but when she got home she found them in two plaits.

The concerned mum says she questioned her daughter about it after noticing the change and was told a teacher's assistant changed it.

The mum who goes by the online name "To-do-list-is-too-long", took to Mumsnet to share her concerns over why the school didn't seek permission before tampering with her daughter's hairstyle.

"When I picked her up from school, she had two low plaits in, I didn't notice for ages and until she was in the car and only then as it was different to how I do it and then I remembered her hair in the morning."

She added: "I asked [my daughter] why her hair had changed and she said the assistant called her over after lunch when she was playing with her friend and took her hair out and put two plaits in."

She reveals her initial concern was that the changed hairstyle was because of nits.

"My first thought was nits maybe, but we always get informed by the teacher that day, plus an email goes out." She then asked: "Did she just not like the style?"

But if she was seeking validation by posting her quandary, she didn't quite get it, with responders coming back with a mixed response.

Many comments suggested the "bunches" her daughters' hair were in might have fallen loose while she was playing.

One person commented: "Probably one bunch came out. Five-year-olds are not reliable narrators. At our primary everyone should have their hair up." 

Another chimed in: "Was some of it hanging loose? Lots of schools don't like long hair hanging down, it can get stuck in stuff and yes, nits!"

But a third who worked in schools had this reaction: "I work in a primary school and would never do this. Seems odd. Only thing I can think of was it was in her face and she mentioned it was annoying her. I think that's the only reason I would touch a child's hair!"
