A love letter to all mums on Mother's Day: 'I see you. Every day'

Brittany Hoskins

One day out of 365 to celebrate a woman who's working around the clock. One Sunday set aside to say thank you, to say, "We see you".

Well, I see you. Every day.

The new mum, sitting in the dark at 3am, sleep deprived and wondering if you're worthy of your new role. You can't remember the last time you showered without thinking 'are they crying?!' let alone the last time you washed your hair.

You long for your old life while simultaneously wondering how you ever lived without your baby. You're never alone and yet, sometimes you feel lonely.

The mum-to-be, filled with fear and anticipation. Counting down the days until your little one arrives while also trying to soak up every second before life changes forever. Buying jumpsuit, after jumpsuit, after jumpsuit and still feeling like you don't have enough – what size will they be?!

The mums of kids with special needs, who are tirelessly advocating for their children. Racing around to therapy sessions and doctors' appointments. Filled with worry about schools and the future, all while trying to smile and hold it together.

The mothers who have lost children, a pain no one can truly understand unless it happens to them. My heart goes out to you today and every day.

And the women who have lost their mothers, who find this day particularly painful. You're loved and I send my love.

The women struggling with infertility, you're stronger than you know. Be kind to yourself today, you will get through this and we're here for you.

The women who love and care for children who aren't their own. Doing your best to be the best possible person for that little life. You're a shoulder to cry on, a confidant and sometimes the sole carer – you're superwoman.

The fur-baby mummas. Yes, you! You're there for play, for cuddles, through sickness, through it all. You love that being so much it hurts. They're family and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

All mums, doing their best every damn day. Juggling home life, work life, school, social activities. Putting on a brave face, pushing through when all you want to do is cry. Doing everything for everyone else.

You're the glue that holds it all together.

And my mum, I'm so proud to be your daughter. To have you guide me through motherhood.

Thirty-one years old and you're still holding my hand and oh, how I appreciate you. Today, more than ever - I see you.

I see how you've always put us first and yourself last.

How you put your dreams on hold to help us fulfill ours.

How you hurt every time I cried when you dropped me off at school.

I see what you sacrificed, from your body to your alone time; how you would've wished so badly for us to leave you alone while you went to the toilet and yet, you never turned us away.

I feel your frustration coming home from work to a sink full of dirty dishes, homework not done and us running wild.

You feel our anger, our sadness and our happiness.

I see how you've always been our number one supporter, our greatest ally. And although we're all grown-ups now, I see how a mother's job is never done.

Thank you and Happy Mother's Day.
