How being a 'crap housewife' helped Jessica Rowe

Shelly Horton

TV personality Jessica Rowe says she fails all the time.

If you have seen her cooking you’ll know that’s true! Her burnt panko crumb offerings to husband and Channel Nine newsreader Peter Overton and daughters Allegra and Giselle are pretty grim.

But she says it’s important to celebrate failings to show that no one is perfect.

She was appalled by competitive mothers posting precision planned and artfully decorated school lunches that made her feel incompetent.  So that prompted her to start posting photos of her terrible meals with the hashtag #craphousewife.

Well other mums LOVED it and soon she had a tribe of women also using the hashtag.

In the Failing Fabulously podcast, she also talks about feeling like a failure when she developed post-natal depression. Although the rational part of her brain told her mental illness was not a failing, her disease meant she hid it from everyone.

Once she got well enough she decided she should speak publicly so other women don’t feel like failures.

Now she’s a patron for the Mental Health Council of Australia and an ambassador for Beyond Blue. In 2015 Jess was honoured as a Member of the Order of Australia for her mental health advocacy work and her contribution to Australian media.

Talk about turning failures into successes. She’s the Queen of Failing Fabulously!
